It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our amazing sister, Marion “Nan” Doris Sheppard. Nan went to her Creator during the early morning hours of February 16, 2017 after a brief struggle with cancer. Preparing Paradise for her arrival were her parents Lawrence and Doris Sheppard and her brother Douglas Sheppard. Left to mourn are Nan’s siblings Shirley (Gary) Leibel, Jack Sheppard, Joan Mants, Gregg (Karen) Sheppard, and Robert (Bonnie) Sheppard, as well as many nieces, nephews, Aunts, Uncle, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
Nan came in to the world on March 18, 1941 at Notre Dame Hospital in North Battleford, the first of seven children. She graduated from BCI in Battleford and then at the age of 19 joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, where she became a Recreational Specialist. After a seven year career with the RCAF she left and moved to Vancouver BC to attend Simon Fraser University in the Kinesiology program. During this time Nan lived with her maternal grandparents, Cyril and Kate Neale. She enjoyed a wide variety of jobs, including driving cars off large cargo ships at the harbor, managing a Red Rooster and working for a year at a First Nations community in Mount Currie, BC. Eventually Nan moved back to Saskatchewan and worked as Director of Recreation in Kerrobert. A similar position came up in her home town, so she moved back to Battleford, retiring in 2002. Not finding an idle retirement agreeing with her, she began to work part time at Wal-Mart and remained there for several years.
Nan loved this province and loved this town and gave back and paid forward over and over again. She sat on several committees and volunteered with several organizations. A few years ago Nan was selected by the Federal government to go to Ottawa, where she received an award in recognition of her years of volunteering.
Nan will be missed so very much by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.
A celebration of Nan’s life will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday Feb. 21/17 at the Battleford Legion Hall (262 22nd Street, Battleford, SK.) A private interment will take place at a later date.
