MANSEL LLEWELLYN HEWISON
October 13, 1932-February 18, 2018
The family of Mansel L. Hewison is sad to announce the passing of their father, grandfather and great-grandfather in Battleford, Saskatchewan on Sunday, February 18, 2018, at the age of 85 years. Dad was born in Prince Albert and raised on the family farm at Lily Plain where he lived and worked alongside his family until he was a young man. He first ventured to La Ronge to work for Co-operative Fisheries in 1955. He developed a life-long love of the north and after returning to farming and various other jobs for several years, he came back to La Ronge in 1966 with his wife Dorothy (nee Schindel) and his three daughters. The family grew to include two sons born in La Ronge. Dad moved his family north to manage the meat department at the La Ronge Co-op Store but soon after saw opportunity in being self-employed. Over the next 37 years, the family owned and operated several businesses: water delivery and sewer collection in La Ronge, Air Ronge, and surrounding reserves before municipal water and sewer was installed, seasonal stores that sold ice cream, sundaes, milk shakes, penny candy, hot dogs, hamburgers and groceries in La Ronge and Waden Bay, and Pines Auto Care in La Ronge. The family worked hard but also took time to enjoy fishing, camping and exploring the north. Dad was a councilman with the Town of La Ronge and a member of the La Ronge Elks for many years. Dad retired in 2004 and moved south so that he could be closer to family and friends. He was happy to return to farm country for his retirement and spent countless hours driving around the countryside visiting, and admiring all nature had to offer. Dad is lovingly remembered and missed by his daughters, Wendy (Terry), Colleen (Sonny), and Susan (Garth); his son, Preston and daughter-in-law, Michelle; grandchildren, Kenzy, Dylan, Kendra, Dara, Skyler, Courtney, Megan, Mitchell, Jessica, and Connor; great-grandchildren, Pharrynn, Kingston, Korbihn, Krihschen, Khyra, Kayleigh, Sebastian, Zain, Tatumn, and Oakley. He is also survived by his sisters, Marlene and Noreen. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy in 2016; his youngest son, Morley in 2010; his parents George and Mildred (nee Deller); his brothers, Wilbur and Geordy; and sister, Darlene. The family wishes to thank the staff at Battleford District Care, Dr. Campbell and the home care staff of Prairie North for helping Colleen and Sonny care for Dad the last 3 years. A private family celebration of Dad’s life will occur at a later date. We will always remember his creativity, sense of humour and the twinkle in his eye. Memorial donations in Mansel’s name may be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of River Park Funeral Home in Prince Albert, SK, 306-764-2727, Donald M. Moriarty, Funeral Director.
