Ethel Jean Zawada
December 5, 1935 – September 26, 2022
Jean Zawada, of Saskatoon, SK, formerly of Shell Lake, SK, passed away on September 26, 2022 from diabetes complications at the age of 86 years.
Jean Atkinson grew up on a farm at Laventure, SK before moving into Spiritwood for High School and then attending Teacher’s College in Saskatoon. The French-speaking district of her youth served her well in later years teaching that language, among many other subjects.
After graduating from Teacher’s College, Jean taught near Spiritwood. She met another young teacher from a neighboring district named Frank Zawada. The result was a union that lasted for over 62 years, mostly in Shell Lake where they both taught and contributed greatly to building the community, Memorial Lake Regional Park and the resort village of Big Shell Lake. There weren’t many things around Shell Lake that she didn’t take part in, whether it was the UCW, curling, operating a diner, community college guidance, supporting the family farm – she even tried golf once or twice. Most importantly to her, she raised a family of four and was the foundation of the Zawada family.
For the past several years, Jean lived in Saskatoon. She enjoyed the company of her fellow residents at Preston Park II, watched Blue Jays games and most of all, every possible curling event.
Jean was predeceased by her husband Frank in 2018, by her parents Wilfred and Phyllis Atkinson, and her brother Lawrence (Lorne) and sister Marguerite. She is survived by her son Craig (Dianne Martin) and grandchildren Daniel (Stephanie) and Kate (Christopher), her son Ross and granddaughter Rocio, her daughter Lana Chuhaniuk (Dale) and her daughter Bev.
At her request, there will be a private family service at the Shell Lake Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home & Crematorium in Spiritwood, SK. (306) 883 – 3500. Jean had many causes and charities near to her heart. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a cause which is important to you.
