Hugh Jenner
June 23, 1946 – October 25, 2021
Hugh Harley Jenner, age 75, known to many as “Mr. Jenner” or “Hughie”, passed away peacefully Monday, October 25th, 2021, concluding a long journey with cancer. He grew up in Fort San, Saskatchewan, attended high school at Luther College in Regina and earned his teaching degree through studies at U of R and U of S. His teaching career (and a literal flip of a coin) soon led him to Churchill, Manitoba where he met his outstanding future wife, Peggy Funke. After getting married in 1969 and years of residence in Ile-la-Crosse and Beauval, they then settled in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, which is still the family home. Hugh and Peggy were blessed with three children who followed diverse career paths: Krista, teacher in Wainwright; Wade, international development in Switzerland; Rusty, electrical engineer in Calgary.
Hugh had a passion for people and touched so many lives through his teaching and community involvement throughout the years. He played music in church, started the first school band at Hartley Clark Elementary, directed the grad choirs and later in life, with Peggy, performed for students in many different classrooms and schools. He enjoyed coaching various local sports teams and performing in community theatre. His love of travel and the outdoors saw Hugh and his family touring Canada and beyond, as well as camping, canoeing, golfing, and skiing in the region around Spiritwood.
Hugh had a gift of making friends wherever he went, be it in the winters in Phoenix, through his involvement in the Cancer Connection, or simply walking down the street. He was genuinely interested in the people he met, always curious to know what they were up to and how they were doing. His positive outlook on life and humour were inspirational. He will be dearly missed.
Hugh is survived by his wife Peggy, Krista and Shane (Megan, Mathew, Lucas), Wade and Emma (Ellen, Anya), Rusty and Jackie (Allie, Sully, Rhett), his sisters Lynda and Nancy, and other extended family members. The family is planning to hold a celebration of life for Hugh in the summer of 2022 for friends and family.
