Hildegard Lessing passed away peacefully on January 21st, 2018 in North Battleford at the age of 91. Hildegard was born on April 24, 1926 in Offenbach Germany, the daughter of Bernhard and Magdalena Friedrich. She was the 3rd oldest of six children. Hilde grew up taking care of her family as times were hard. Her father was hard of hearing and her mother was deaf. During WW II Hilde became a Red Cross volunteer helping to recover the wounded from bombing raids. She received many honours from the Red Cross over the years. After the war she met her husband Werner in Wiesbaden and they married in 1949.There they raised their children Wolfgang, Angelika and Birgit.
Werner and Hilde built their dream home in Wiesbaden, but Werner was restless and wanted to join his brothers in Canada. In 1974 they immigrated with their daughter Birgit to a farm near White Fox, SK. Wolfgang and his wife Maria remained in Wiesbaden. Angelika was already living with her husband Andy in California. Life on the farm was another challenge for Hilde that she managed with great tenacity and humour. She made many friends in her new community and found many ways in delighting them and the Canadian Lessings with her warm hospitality.
Hilde worked for many years as a Care Aid at Pineview Lodge in Nipawin, retiring at age 65. By then they had built a beautiful home on 40 acres overlooking the Saskatchewan River near Nipawin. It was there, after retiring, that Hilde enjoyed some of the best years of her life. Hilde moved to North Battleford in 2012 to be closer to her daughter Birgit. Hilde was predeceased by her parents Magdalena and Bernhard Friedrich, her husband Werner Lessing and her siblings Elisabeth, Annelise, Wilhelm, Herman and Rudolf. Hilde leaves to mourn her son Wolfgang Lessing and his wife Maria, daughter Angelika Wieling and her husband Andy, daughter Birgit Lessing and her husband Laird Brittin and granddaughter Annika Lessing. Hilde will be sadly missed and remembered by all.
