West Side Tour of Prince Albert National Park
Saturday, August 12
The public is invited to get to know the west side of Prince Albert National Park with a group tour. The trails provide access to fescue grasslands where a herd of free-roaming plains bison are sometimes spotted. Hikers can enjoy high vantage points with many great photo opportunities in the area. The Valleyview Lookout Trail is wheelchair accessible and leads to the Valleyview picnic site.
The West Side Tour takes place Saturday, August 12 and is supported by west side residents. The trails chosen for the event are easy to walk; and are suitable for children and people of all ages. The west side of the park is accessible by Hwy 55 in the west and the Cookson Road in the east. Participants meet at the parking lot near Valleyview trail. The first hike is to the Stoney Plain Meadow lookout. The group then drives to the Amyot Lake Trail Spur for a hike to Amyot Lake. The Amyot Trail has many water fowl viewing opportunities. It takes hikers to sedge covered meadows and scenic Amyot Lake. This is the only group hiking event of the season that encompasses both the Stoney Plains and Amyot Lake trails in a single afternoon.
After the hikes, there is a gathering at the Sturgeon Crossing Station. The public is invited to bring along their own food to barbecue or roast over a fire. Barbecues are supplied. Afterwards, particpants can gather around the campfire to tell stories and share music.
