Sex Work and Human Trafficking: Promising Practices and Debunking Myths

October 28, 2016 – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Park Town Hotel, Saskatoon

There are many myths and misconceptions about youth involved in the sex trade. These myths and misconceptions can add to the harms experienced by these youth. In addition to trauma, sexual harms can include HIV and sexually transmitted infections. In order to provide relevant information to health professionals and educators who work with youth, the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is hosting the presentation Sex Work and Human Trafficking: Promising Practices and Debunking Myths on October 28, 2016 at the Park Town Hotel in Saskatoon, SK and via live stream.

This presentation will cover:

  • Promising practices for working with sex workers and harm reduction strategies for this population
  • Importance of differentiating between sex work and human trafficking
  • Stages of exploitation, risk and vulnerability factors, warning signs, trauma treatment, and interventions

Our presenter, Carly Kalish, is a social worker, trauma counselling innovator, and tireless advocate for survivors of domestic sex trafficking. Carly has personally touched the lives of many youth involved in the sex trade. Carly’s pioneering work has taken her to Africa where she spearheaded HIV prevention and literacy programs in a brothel in Ghana. Back in Toronto, Carly currently leads East Metro Youth Services’ gender-based violence and human trafficking programs. Carly has been described as “one of the go-to thought leaders on domestic human trafficking in our country”.
