Position Summary

The purpose of the Knowledge Keeper (KK) at ANHN is to help the Network develop their capacity to respectfully blend cultural and professional knowledge throughout the work of staff, members and people who access the Outreach Program. The presence of the KK is integral to the delivery of holistically based programming coordinated through the ANHN.

Reporting to the CEO, the KK will demonstrates an understanding of and respect for the history, traditions and culture of the Indigenous peoples of Canada; is a person who can integrate Indigenous values and principles into all programming; carries their own knowledge and life wisdom with respect while respecting the community and staff; upholds the integrity of the ANHN, while supporting the people in the development of their own knowledge bundles.

The KK enriches all ANHN programs with their life experience, knowledge and ability to affirm Indigenous ethics and teachings; focuses on and strengthens relationships within and between communities; helps to link culture within the agencies, the systems and the institutions; teaches people how to work with other community Knowledge Keepers and Elders; and, facilitates the presence of diverse teachings from a variety of other Knowledge Keepers and Elders, nations and communities.

The KK understands the importance of healing from colonization and relearning Indigenous history, worldview, language and culture. Due to their own wellness and healing, the KK models and enacts inclusivity at all levels of teaching and learning with all populations.

The KK also models and reflects the importance and benefits of a healthy lifestyle and the importance of healing from the traumas and events that colonialism has created for Indigenous peoples.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing cultural-based support, advice and assistance for staff and the community.                                           
  • Providing Indigenous based personal guidance and personal counselling to all Indigenous people affiliated with ANHN.
  • Assist in organizing social and cultural events that bring staff and community together.
  • Creating, supervising and delivering culturally oriented workshops and training to staff and the community.
  • Assisting in providing workshops to improve cultural capacity and Indigenous knowledge sharing for agencies, systems and institutions.
  • Working with the ANHN staff to assist in the promotion of and awareness building around Indigenous cultural issues within the ANHN programs, training and services being offered.
  • Providing guidance and supervising traditional cleansing and ceremonial activities.
  • Assisting on council groups, research groups and organized ANHN training as requested.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate degree in social work, human services, or equivalent experience, with 3-5 years of experience working in an Indigenous community providing Knowledge Keeper or similar services.
  • Recognition by Indigenous community as having knowledge and understanding of the traditional culture of community as well as spiritual and social traditions.
  • Knowledge of traditional Indigenous cultures, ceremonial practices, protocols and songs.
  • Cognizant and respectful of the diversity of Indigenous cultures, languages and traditions in the region and beyond.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous traditional healing that may include the use of traditional plants used for healing.
  • Familiar with an Indigenous language would be considered an asset.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in mentoring and support.
  • Well-developed skills in the preparation of informative and engaging presentations/training and teaching sessions.
  • The ability to prioritize workload and deal with multiple demands.
  • High degree of flexibility and ability to multi-task in a busy environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent leadership and teaching skills
  • Excellent time-management, interpersonal and organizational skills as well as the capability to take initiative, solve problems and suggest solutions.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment with regard to the need for supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with professionals in a team-oriented environment.
  • Understanding of continuum of mental health and relationship to holistic health and wellness.

DECISION MAKING:

  • Decisions regarding when and to whom to refer people to within and outside the ANHN.
  • Decisions with respect to the degree of risk that a person may pose to themselves or others and how to respond.
  • Ability to distinguish between circumstances in which decisions can be made independently and those where consultation is needed.
  • Ability to determine the best recommendations to make when approached for advice or resources.
  • Decisions regarding how to go about getting the information necessary to make informed recommendations; exercise judgment on the quality and reliability of information referenced.
  • Decisions regarding the coordination of information, material, facilities, and logistics for programming.

Hours of work:  35 hours/week   Annual Salary: $48,000 (benefits) Term:  March 2016 to February 2017
