When you walk through the front doors of Empress Furniture in North Battleford, don’t expect a regular furniture store. The feeling is more one of walking into a hidden treasure room full of fantastic and unique items, which is no why it’s no surprise that Empress Furniture and Décor was named Best Kept Local Secret for the 2017 Best of the Best Awards.

“Empress was built on the whole premise is that it has a draw beyond here. The idea was to get people shopping from here, but also from outside our area. And how do you do that? By having items that you can’t find anywhere else,” said co-owner Terry Caldwell.

“It’s the feature piece in your house. People seldom buy a whole house full of furniture from us, but they’ll buy a main focal/feature piece, or the piece people talk about,” said Terry.  About the type of unique items they have available at Empress. “It’s one of a kind, one-off, craftsman built items, but that doesn’t mean it’s expensive,” he added.

With unique décor ordered in from speciality world-wide buyers based out of Vancouver and California, Terry says many of the items are conversation pieces in any home large or small.

“We have two main sources in Vancouver and California. Those two companies specialise in shopping the world 8 months of the year. They are only here intermittently and we meet with them a few times to pick what we want to bring here,” said Terry.

And once you walk in, you realize just how many unique, fantastic items are available for customers. According to Terry, it takes at least an hour-and-a-half to do a cursory tour of the building, which is filled with gems from around the world.

“Part of the excitement is the surprise when you walk in. And we change the store over about four times a year to always have something new for our customers,” he explained.

The staff and owners at Empress Furniture and Décor believe in the highest standards of workmanship, quality and of course customer service.  

Besides offering thousands of unique items, they will also help you find your special feature piece and can order it online through their catalog.

Asked why it’s the Battlefords Best Kept Secret, Terry explains he doesn’t mind the secrecy title.

“Part of the idea is that the notoriety of the store results in word of mouth from customers,” he said.
