SJHL wrap up showcase with MJHL, win four of six

Regina, Sask. – The final day of the 2019 SJHL/MJHL Showcase kicked off Tuesday with the SJHL’s Team Schwartz defeating the MJHL’s Team Garbutt 4-2. The game was the second meeting between the two sides.

Notre Dame Hounds’ goalie Riley Kohonick was named Team Schwartz player of the game, stopping 37 of the 39 shots he faced in the win. Dauphin Kings’ forward Grady Hobbs, who scored in the contest, was given player of the game honours for Team Garbutt.

Jaxon Weibe of the Nipawin Hawks opened the scoring before Yorkton defenseman Tyson Janzen turned the advantage to two prior to the conclusion of the first.

In the second, Team Schwartz added two more goals, courtesy of Mustangs’ forward Parker Fofonoff and Humboldt defenseman Chase Felgueiras.

“It was a good experience,” Fofonoff said. It’s pretty fast out there. You’ve got to get used to it out there [while] playing with new people.”

Fofonoff said he was familiar with many of his Team Schwartz teammates prior to the showcase, but it was nice to get to know them a bit better away from the rink.

“I played lots of them in Midget and Bantam,” he said. “I knew who they were, but just didn’t really know them specifically.”

In matinee action, the MJHL’s Team Belfour, coming off a 3-1 defeat last night to Team Kunitz, rebounded to beat Team Mitchell 4-0.

Waywayseecappo Wolverines’ goaltender Isaac Labelle was named player of the game, stopping all 30 shots he faced for the shutout.

After a scoreless first period of play, Team Belfour’s Brett Namaka of the Selkirk Steelers broke the ice in the second. Nakama’s goal was followed by three more in the third period courtesy of Virden’s Kolten Kanaski, Winkler Flyers’ forward, Griffin Leonard and Ocean Wiesblatt of the Portage Terriers to take the decision 4-0.

In goal for team Mitchell, Humboldt’s Dane Dow made 24 stops on the 27 shots he faced.

The final game of the showcase saw the SJHL’s Team Kunitz best the MJHL’s Team Zajac 8-1.

Five goals were scored by Flin Flon Bombers, as Flin Flon forwards Nate Hooper, Daylan Marchi, Chrystopher Collin, Donavan Houle-Villeneuve, and Caleb Moretz combined for three goals and seven assists on the night.

Collin, with a goal and four points of his own, was named player of the game for Team Kunitz.

North Stars’ forward MacGregor Sinclair also factored in as a prominent piece of the offence, scoring two goals on the night, while Matthias Urbanski registered an assist for the Stars.

With all four of the North Stars’ representatives at the showcase playing in the final game of the night, the contest presented one final opportunity for North Stars’ coach, Brayden Klimosko to see his players in action from up in the stands.

“Honestly it’s really good,” Klimosko said of the fresh perspective. “I think you find some of their tendencies that maybe we can work on in practice. It’s been nice to watch a little bit of them and see how they’re competing and cheer them on. Hopefully, they get some looks, as that’s what [the showcase] is all about.

At the end of the two days, it was the SJHL picking up a win in four of the six games, but Commissioner Bill Chow said the wins aren’t really what matters in a showcase like this one.  

“I know it’s a non-traditional tournament,” Chow said. “The wins and the losses don’t really matter. What really counts is the players coming, showing their abilities on the ice and, with a number of scouts in attendance, showing [the scouts] what they can do.”
