Silvernagle and Dunstone satisfy crowd at Civic Centre

Jan 11, 2019 | 1:54 PM

It was quite the 11:30 a.m. draw for Saskatchewan in North Battleford.

Matt Dunstone’s Regina-based rink made quick work of Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson, putting up three in the first and fifth ends. The third end really broke the game away, as Dunstone put up four, cruising to a 10-2 win in just five ends.

“We had to just keep plugging away,” he said. “Any time you start the game off with three, it’s a big momentum shift. We just ran with it.”

Dunstone will try to continue to claw back after his second win tomorrow morning when they kick off the day at 8 a.m. against the loser between Glenn Howard and Brad Jacobs, who play at 6:30 p.m.

On the women’s side, it was a playoff-clinching win for North Battlefords Robyn Silvernagle. Her foursome was in control from the beginning, cruising to an 8-4 win over Silvana Tirinzoni in six ends.

The win comes following a tough 8-3 loss to Rachel Homan. The team held a meeting yesterday, and they knew it was time to turn it around.

“That was not our best game yesterday,” she said. “We knew today that we’d have to come out a lot sharper. It was going back to our plans and our systems of what we’ve been doing, going back to that and just going out and curling.”

The fans were again heavily on Silvernale’s side. With five separate local schools in the stands, the rink had quite the following in the autograph line following the conclusion of the match.

“Its so awesome, and I hope a lot of those kids curl,” she said. “(I hope) curling will be growing in Saskatchewan. It was a really incredible feeling having those fans out there cheering, and those kids there and cheering, and cheering for good shots.”

Although the win seemed second nature to Silvernagle, she understands how quickly a game can get away from any team at any given time.

“It’s a slippery game,” she said. “Anybody can beat anybody on any given day. We definitely feel like we can beat anyone at any time too, but sometimes things go right, and sometimes things don’t.”

With the win, SIlvernagle advances to tomorrows quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m.

In other action, Edmonton’s Laura Walker won a back and forth affair with Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa 8-6. Walker advances to the quarters, while Fujisawa plays tonight at 6:30 p.m.

American Nina Roth scored two in the eighth to defeat 2017 Champion Casey Scheidegger 5-4. Roth advances, while Scheidegger will play at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Finally, in the other men’s game, Winnipeg’s Braden Calvert defeated Kingston’s Scott McDonald 8-5. The loss ends McDonald’s week, while the Calvert win gives him a date at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
