Scheidegger continues North Battleford success with win over Carey

Day two of action at the Civic Centre is underway for the 2019 Meridian Canadian Open.

The 8 a.m. draw wrapped up with a couple of big matchups in the mix.

The 2017 champion Casey Scheidegger dominated throughout her match with 2018 champion Chelsea Carey. The all Alberta matchup only went six ends, and after scoring a triple in the second and sixth ends, it was a lopsided win for Scheidegger.

“We really wanted to get a good feel for the ice,” she said. “[It was] fantastic, so we feel really comfortable with that. We’re excited to be here and it was a really good, exciting opening game.”

When Scheidegger heard of the Meridian’s return to North Battleford, she was excited to get back here. Her 2017 win in the city was her debut on the Grand Slam, and she said just being in the city brings back many emotions.

“It has a lot of good memories for us,” she said. “We’re excited to be back.”

Moving forward, Scheidegger will now await the winner of Anna Hasselborg and Eve Muirhead who will play on sheet B at 11:30 p.m. She said she has a pretty clear focus on what she wants as the tournament plays on.

“Stay consistent and enjoy it,” she said. “Make sure we’re doing everything we can to make shots out there.”

In the other matchups this morning, Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers couldn’t bounce back from a strong Brendan Bottcher start, as Bottcher cruised to an 8-4 victory.

Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa had a strong showing against Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni, scoring four in the final two ends to win 8-3 in seven ends.

The longest match was between Winnipeg’s Darcy Robertson and Switzerland’s Elena Stern. It was a tight one to the finish, when Robertson with a steal of two in the final end solidified the victory.

In the final matchup, American Nina Roth and Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson played tight, with Roth taking the win following two straight steals in the seventh and eighth ends.

With a win in the next draw, North Battleford’s Robyn Silvernagle will take on Roth, and with a loss, will have a tough matchup against Einarson.
