North Stars acquire Heino from MJHL

Dec 3, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars recently made a trade over the weekend, acquiring 20-year-old forward, Dayton Heino from the Neepawa Natives of the MJHL, in exchange for forward Tanner Robin.

Heino, listed at 5’11″, 190 lbs, began his junior career in the SJHL with the Melville Millionaires, playing with the team from the ’16-17 season, up until early this year, before he was dealt to Neepawa 16 games into the season.

All total, the Minnedosa, Manitoba product played 131 games in the SJHL, having registered 27 goals and 73 points in the process, as well as notching an additional five points over his 12-game stint in the MJHL with the Natives.

When asked about what the acquisition means for the team, coach and general manager of the North Stars, Brayden Klimosko said between the forward’s skill level and versatility, Heino should make a solid fit within the Stars’ group.

“He brings some experience as a 20-year-old, and I think he’s bringing some more skill to our top end,” Klimosko said. “We’re trying to build a team that plays hard, plays fast, and he can play penalty kill, [and] power play; I’m really happy to acquire someone like that, someone like him.”

Fans of the North Stars won’t have to wait long to see the newest Star in action, as Heino is expected to be in the lineup to make his North Stars’ debut at the Civic Centre when the team returns to the ice tomorrow night against the division-leading, Humboldt Broncos.
