Local Salsa Club heads full swing into holiday season

Nov 30, 2018 | 7:00 AM

The Battlefords Social Salsa Club (BSSC) is hosting a salsa night at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #70 Dec. 6, inviting residents of the community and area to take part.

Taking place at the Legion in the upstairs, all are welcome to attend the salsa night, regardless of previous experience or lack thereof.

In fact, as Megan Hewison, co-ordinator of the salsa group said, a large majority of the people who attend the salsa nights are doing so without prior experience.

“Probably about 98 per cent of the people who come are beginners,” she said. “They’ve never salsa danced before and we just teach them some basic steps. Every time when people are leaving they’re asking about when they can come back to do this again. People are very excited about it.”

Hewison started the group a couple of months ago, after spending time traveling to different salsa nights in bigger centres such as Saskatoon and Edmonton. However, little did she know just how big a draw salsa would prove to be right away in the Battlefords, with between 40 and 50 people attending each of the first two sessions, an attendance that has the group’s founder looking ahead to perhaps more frequent classes moving forward.

“It’s only been offered a couple months, with this being our third one, so we did October, November, and now December here. Right now we’re doing once a month, but we’re thinking about starting in January, bumping it up to by-weekly and then eventually it will be a weekly thing.”

Adding a seasonal wrinkle to the mix for December’s gathering. Those taking part are invited to showcase their festive spirit and wear their ugly Christmas sweaters or festive holiday colours.

When asked about why residents of the Battlefords and area should come and take part, Hewison said the list of reasons to attend is lengthy.

“It’s such a nice sense of community that’s being created there; plus it’s good exercise, it’s inexpensive, and it’s really just a ton of fun,” she said.

On Dec. 6 the class at the Legion will begin at 7:15 p.m.
