Humane Society at capacity, holding flash sale today

Nov 23, 2018 | 11:00 AM

Black Friday is usually about the retail sales, but the Battlefords Humane Society is stepping up and getting in the festivities.

The society is holding a sale following an influx of cats and kittens to the shelter, bringing their total up to 89 cats in their care. The space’s maximum capacity is usually around 50 to 60 cats, but without a place to house them, staff are making adoption costs minimal for today only.

It’s $50 per cat, which comes with all of their vaccinations, cost of spaying or neutering, they’re microchipped, a two-week free vet check-up, 30 days of free pet insurance and a complimentary one-year membership to the Humane Society.

Michelle Spark tried to give a sense of how many cats they actually have, and how imperative it is that people come and adopt.

“I have cats in my office, I have cats everywhere, and nowhere to put them,” she said. “They’re coming in faster than we can get them out.”

The numbers are down for dogs, going from 38 to around 20, Spark said. They’re still going for normal prices today. She also said that even this morning, they already had six cats dropped off at the shelter since they’ve been open.

Spark mentioned if any animals are dropped off, to make sure the centre is open and the animals are received before leaving. In an instance this morning, a few cats were dropped off before staff opened their doors, and the animals were freezing when Spark went to get them.

“Please do not dump animals at the shelter when we are not open,” she said. “These mom and babies were frozen this morning, they’re doing good now, but they never should have been dumped at our doors when we’re not open.”

The Humane Society is also getting set for a big project. Members are looking for people to send in their photos of animals that were adopted within the past year, so they can start creating a video to be shown off at an upcoming gala.

Spark said owners can send in the photos through Facebook by direct messaging the Battlefords Humane Society. She is looking for feel good photos of animals having fun, with their families, and generally enjoying life.

“It’s kind of a feel good video for people that come to the gala,” she said. “This year, our theme is a dog’s purpose, we want to get across to people that shelter dogs have a purpose too, they’re not just throw away animals.”
