North West College (NWC) celebrated its students’ successes during the annual Entrance Scholarship Ceremony in North Battleford, Friday.

In total $30,000 in scholarships was awarded to 68 students attending the Battlefords campus.

The college stated the award recipients demonstrated “outstanding academic achievement and commitment” in pursuing advancement in post-secondary education at North West College.

During the 2017-2018 academic year, North West College handed out about $104,000 to students. It will be giving out about $120,000 in total during the current academic year.

Individual and corporate donors provided support for the NWC scholarships program, along with a grant from the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarships program, available through the Ministry of Advanced Education. Through this grant initiative, the province matches every dollar the college receives for scholarships from its industry partners and private donors, to further benefit students.

NWC president and CEO Jay Notay said following the ceremony it’s a huge accomplishment for students to be recognized for their endeavours in this way.

“Students experience a lot of challenges when they are in school,” he said. “It’s not about academics all the time. Sometimes they have challenges at home and so forth. Every bit of support that students can receive from the community in manners like this helps them to be successful in school.”

He added for students to be able to experience this type of support also helps remove a little stress on them as they are going through their programs.

Notay added it was impressive to see so many representatives from business, industry and the community attending the ceremony “demonstrating their commitment to our students’ success.”

Bill Volk, with the NWC Board of Governors, was thrilled to participate in the ceremony and honour the many students for their excellence in education.

“These people, they are the strongest and brightest – it’s very important to recognize them and reward them for their hard work and their achievements,” he said.  “Hopefully, they will stay within our community and our province, and make it a better place,” he added.

The North Battleford awards event marked the second of two entrance scholarship ceremonies for North West College. The first awards ceremony was held in Meadow Lake on Nov. 2.
