Maidstone Festival of Trees preparing for 11th year

Nov 16, 2018 | 11:00 AM

A long-standing tradition in Maidstone is returning for its eleventh year.

The Maidstone Festival of Trees changed hands this year, moving from the Red Hatter’s to the Maidstone Community Health Committee. It will be held at the Maidstone Health Complex from Monday to Saturday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the one exception being Saturday, where it’s 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Matthew Greshner, President of Maidstone Community Health Committee said this is a major fundraiser for the hospital, where proceeds will go directly to the Health Complex to assist in purchasing medical equipment.

“People really enjoy the festival of trees,” he said. “It’s very Christmassy inside the atrium. It’s the first big event of winter, and people seem to enjoy that. People come out and are very generous and help us out.”

In the past 10 years, the Red Hatters have been able to raise $110,000. People have the opportunity to go and bid on trees, Christmas decor, gift baskets and gift certificates, giving them a wide variety of items to support the Health Complex.

Choirs will perform Wednesday through Friday, and Santa photos and activities for the children on Saturday.

They’re also going to be holding a luminary on Friday for those missing family members during the holidays.

“Throughout the week people can buy remembrance bags,” he said. “We’re going to light up these bags and have a moment of remembrance for people at the luminary ceremony.”

When it comes to items that will be purchased from the proceeds, Greschner said the department heads provided “Christmas Wish Lists” to make sure residents feel comfortable and enjoy their time in the Maidstone Health Complex.
