AAA Stars outshine Blazers

Nov 15, 2018 | 11:26 AM

The Battlefords AAA Stars are coming off a big 3-2 victory Wednesday night over the Saskatoon Blazers.

The win marked the Battlefords’ third straight, with the club outscoring their opposition by a 12-6 margin over the streak.

Despite the Stars’ success as of late, it is not as though the team hasn’t faced its share of adversity in the midst of their current run, with Wednesday night being no exception.

After initially opening the scoring, thanks to a Shayde Peterson tally that marked the forward’s fifth goal of the season, the Battlefords Stars ultimately found themselves trailing at the conclusion of the first period by a 2-1 margin, due largely to a parade to the penalty box in the second half of the period, with the Stars being assessed four minor penalties in the opening frame.

Showing great proficiency with the extra man, each of the Blazers’ two goals in the first came on the power play, with only about three minutes between strikes from both James Form and Karter Prosofsky.

No doubt making a conscious effort to stay disciplined and get back on the attack offensively, the Stars neglected to take another penalty the rest of the game.

Shawn Robinson, manager of the team, said the Stars showed good character to rebound from some penalty trouble early and regain their footing thanks largely to their discipline.

“The team really responded well and came back strong,” Robinson said. “It’s all about staying positive with [the players], as this is a level where they’re allowed to make mistakes and they learn from it.”

Coming out for the second period, the Stars wasted no time in pulling even, with leading scorer, Luke Fenning potting his ninth of the campaign just 53 seconds in to knot the score, 2-2.

With the Stars continuing to press, the club would break through once again just passed the half way point of the second, courtesy of a Cale Tuer-Treble shot that eluded the Blazers’ goaltender, putting the black and silver back on top once again, this time 3-2.

With no scoring to report in the third period, Tuer-Treble’s goal would also prove to be the game winner, tipping the scales in favor of his team, 3-2 the final score.

The Stars will now get some time to rest up before heading back into action Wednesday night at the Civic Centre, as the team welcomes the Tisdale Trojans to town. Puck drop will be at 7:30 p.m.
