BWF urges people to stop dropping hides off

Nov 8, 2018 | 4:00 PM

With no buyer for hides, the Battlefords Wildlife Federation will not be accepting them for the first time in 39 years.

The decision came from the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, because the high collection program that they were on couldn’t find someone to purchase the hides. The program’s proceeds go back into habitat lands, and although it may seem like its only one season, it was still a shock for the federation, including BWF President Vickey Guttormson.

“I don’t have any totals or anything, but it’s going to probably hurt a little bit,” she said. “We’re just going to have to find other funding to create (that funding back).”

As for where people should dispose of their hides, it also creates a barrier when it comes to getting them disposed of safely. Guttormson said people will now have to double bag them and take them to permittable landfills. The BWF urges residents not to dispose of the hides on their property or garbage bin.
