North Stars track down win over Hounds

Nov 4, 2018 | 7:58 PM

The Battlefords North Stars defeated the Notre Dame Hounds Sunday evening 3-2 in regulation time.

The win capped the Stars’ weekend road trip on a high note, making for a successful 2-1 foray over the three-night swing.

Elijah Loon-Stewardson broke the goose egg, putting his team up by one not-quite half-way through the opening period.

The elder Loon-Stewardson’s tally came after Stars’ captain Cody Spagrud fired a stretch-feed 35-feet on the tape for the veteran left winger, allowing the forward to, without having to break stride, receive the pass and bust in on a semi odd-man rush, firing a shot short side in the blink of an eye, over the shoulder of Hounds goaltender, Andrew Henderson, and into the top corner of the net.

Coming out for the second period, Quintin Loon-Stewardson showed he was not to be outdone by his older brother, coming out flying in the opening two minutes to tally a goal of his own.

“Q-Loon,” as he is affectionately known by teammates, who began the weekend looking for his first-career SJHL goal, has made that notion a distant memory at this point.

After scoring his first on Friday night against Estevan, then following it up on Saturday with another against Weyburn, Loon-Stewardson capped off the weekend with an even three for the trip.

Only about three minutes after the 2-0 insurance marker, Ryan Gil turned it to three on the power play, set up by an Elijah Loon-Stewardson feed that the forward managed to thread through the legs of the defender onto the tape of The California Kid, who made no mistake tucking it home on the goaltender.

The Hounds scored a couple late in the third to come close, clawing their way back to within one, courtesy of back-to-back markers from Nolan Renwick and Curtis Weibe, each coming inside the final seven minutes. But the Stars, thanks to solid timely goaltending by Joel Grzybowski and some key shot blocks late, sealed the victory for the second straight game.

The North Stars now get some time off to rest and regroup before getting back in action Friday night at home against Estevan. Puck drop goes at 7:30 p.m.
