RCMP conducting high-visibility traffic stops this weekend

Oct 27, 2018 | 8:00 AM

RCMP members will be out across Saskatchewan this weekend, as officers conduct high-visibility traffic stops Saturday and Sunday.

The RCMP is partnering with SGI this weekend on the traffic safety initiative, conducting safety checks, watching for vehicle violations and promoting safe and sober driving. RCMP spokesperson Rob King said members will be out along both busy highways and lesser-travelled roads as part of the high-visibility initiative.

“The ultimate goal is not necessarily to catch people as they’re doing something wrong, but to prevent them from doing something wrong,” King told paNOW. “So by letting people know that we’re going to be out, we’re going to be out and about, we’re going to be looking for these things, we’re going to be stopping vehicles, hopefully they give it second thought.”

King said it’s important for drivers to stay sober and alert while on Saskatchewan highways. RCMP will be focusing on what they call the “Big Four” or impaired driving, seatbelt use, aggressive driving and distracted driving, which continue to be leading causes of death and injury in Canada.
