Sask. Games surplus fund to help with future sport clubs and new arena

North Battleford City Hall gave the green light to direct the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games surplus fund to use for future sporting clubs and eventually to replace the aged Civic Centre.

A balance of $221,553 from the Games was available for the endowment.

Council approved the recommendation from the Saskatchewan Winter Games Board, with conditions outlined by the city.

“I think the entire city is very proud of the work of the host committee for the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games,” Mayor Ryan Bater told battlefordsNOW Wednesday. “City council was pleased to accept the recommendation of that host committee, and that’s how we are going to proceed.”

Through the process, the surplus from the endowed 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games fund will be directed to the Battlefords and District Community Foundation Inc. Four per cent of the endowed fund will be granted each year to eligible community sport and recreation clubs, organizations and individuals in need of near-term funding.

As well, once the city is ready to proceed with the new Civic Centre project, the endowed funds will be allocated to kick-start that campaign; with the provision the banking of the funds remains transparent.

“We still have some work to do on planning for the replacement of the Civic Centre,” Bater said. “Once those plans are in place, we will likely have a fundraising component. Then, we’re going to plan how we are going to initiate that. Once we’re ready to do that, then that’s when these funds will become active.”

He confirmed the Civic Centre replacement is an ongoing project. This year council budgeted to have a preliminary design completed. The city is currently waiting to hear back on the outcome of this project. The existing Civic Centre was first built in the early 1960s.
