Battleford asking residents not to park in cul-de-sacs on pick up days

Oct 19, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Town of Battleford has been having some issues accessing bins for garbage, recycling and compost pick up around a number of the town’s cul-de-sacs, so it will be implementing a
no-parking policy for these areas on scheduled pick-up days.

Council agreed at its recent meeting to have the signage for restricted parking posted, at an estimated cost of $600 for the signage, plus the installation fee.

People residing in cul-de-sacs will need to look for the town’s new signage and move their vehicles on pick-up days as indicated.

Mayor Ames Leslie said as soon as the crews can install the signs, then the town will start to implement the no-parking policy.

Chief Administrative Officer John Enns-Wind said while the town’s crews are very conscientious, there is an added challenge when people’s cars and trucks are parked within close proximity to the bins, which can easily be avoided if residents temporarily move their vehicles.

The town’s public works department manager Eric Bilanski and Enns-Wind brought the issue to council.

Enns-Wind said in his submitted report that “cul-de-sacs are a design that hampers town operations including compost, garbage and recycling pick up, snow clearing, street sweeping.”

He said the town is working with a major developer to ensure future projects don’t include cul-de-sacs.

The town’s public works department proposed restricting parking on pick-up days since it is concerned about compost, garbage and recycling pick up in cul-de-sacs being challenging for a number of reasons.

Their biggest complaint is that workers have a difficult time safely wielding the large pick-up trucks around these cul-de-sacs. When vehicles are parked on these streets it is difficult for the trucks used for pick up to have enough room to manoeuvre in the area to access the bins. The town is worried a person, vehicle or another object on the street may be hit by one of the trucks in the future, so it wanted to take action now to prevent something like this from happening later.

The cul-de-sacs are also challenging for the town’s big trucks used for snow removal and sweeping the streets.

Parking tickets will be issued to people if they don’t move their vehicles during pick-up times.

According to the town, there are seven locations in Battleford West in particular where parking in cul-de-sacs has posed a problem for pick-up crews.
