Street closure in southeast North Battleford expected until at least Friday

A major road heading to the junction between Battleford and North Battleford is being repaired this week.

Battleford Rd., between Railway Ave. S and Railway Ave. E, will be closed until at least Friday to repair culverts from the 1960s when the road was widened to two lanes, according to Dan Loewen, director of infrastructure for the City.

“When they [did the work], they just butted the culverts together,” he said. “Now the water started eroding underneath the asphalt, formed a cavity and came up through the surface.”

Loewen said the repair started as a quick fix when crews tried to fill a pothole but found asphalt was falling straight through into the culvert.

“That’s when we noticed the culverts had failed. We were going to realign them, but we figured out that in the past that they joined them on sections of the road, and they never did put them together.”

Traffic signs were posted around the closure late last week and Loewen apologised to drivers for the disruption, but said: “it is work that has to go on.”

“We increased the size of the culverts and they should be able to take on all the water now,” he said. “We shouldn’t have a disruption of traffic there for a few years.”

Originally, the city had posted that the fix would take until Oct. 25, but Loewen believes the work will be done sooner than expected, baring appropriate weather and no unexpected disruptions.
