Klimosko family pushes pedals to support STARS for help in Broncos collision

Hundreds gathered in Saskatoon Saturday for a spin-a-thon fundraising effort to support STARS Air Ambulance.

Among them, Brayden Klimosko, the head coach and general manager of the Battlefords North Stars. He and members of his family wanted to help give back to the organization which played a critical role on April 6 during the Humboldt Broncos bus collision as part of the healing process.

Klimosko and his family are very much connected to Humboldt and Broncos community. Klimosko’s father Tim was an assistant coach from September 2005 to May 2012, while Brayden played for the team from 2005 to 2008. In the fall of 2013, he returned to the community as an assistant coach under Dean Brockman, Ryan Smith and Darcy Haugan. He coached and recruited many of the players impacted by the collision.

“My mom and my sister are big into spinning and spin classes and we thought it would be a great family get together to do this,” he said.

Klimosko was collecting pledges for the Ryde the Hanger event online and said he was appreciative of how the community stepped up to offer their support.

“I think it is quite cool to see people who have donated — billets, fans, everyone in this area — it is really neat,” he said. “Everyone wants to support in some way and for people to support the way they did was great.”

Not only was Klimosko collecting funds, but he also added a quintessential Saskatchewan twist to his campaign — entering names into a draw to win pirogies and cabbage rolls handmade by his baba who is quite famous for her offerings in Humboldt.

The fundraiser consisted of participants peddling for four hours, either individually or in a relay format. The campaign was looking to bring in over $200,000. The Klimosko team brought in the second highest amount of money at just over $8,300, according to the Ryde the Hanger website.
