North West Terminal near Unity plans to reopen Monday after fire

North West Terminal grain facility near Unity plans to be open again for business as soon as Monday after dealing with a fire at the site Thursday.

Unity Fire Department firefighters were at the location off Highway 14 East from about 7:30 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. putting out the fire that broke out in the terminal’s dryer.  

Controller Holly Bannerman said the company appreciates the efforts of the firefighters in quelling the blaze.

“We would like to thank the Unity Fire Department and all the volunteers that came out for their efforts and dedication in helping us get it under control,” she told battlefordsNOW Friday.

Bannerman said the dryer won’t be able to be used for the immediate future as it needs to be assessed for damages, however the company will be able to resume operations without it.

“It will be business as usual come Monday,” she said. She is asking people planning to make deliveries on Monday to call first.

Bannerman confirmed the fire was contained to the grain dryer when the blaze started.

According the RCMP the cause of the fire is under investigation although it is not deemed suspicious.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the blaze.

“All of our staff were very well prepared,” Bannerman said. “We have some good emergency measures in place.”

“Everyone was fine; our staff were not at risk,” she said, adding the terminal has about 20 staff members in its offices.

“Our power in the main office is connected to the dryer so when [firefighters] were fighting the fire they shut the power down to the main office too,” she said.

All staff were evacuated at that point.
