New campaign by local school will have long-lasting effect

The Building Bready Playground: Buy a Brick campaign was launched by the elementary school recently.

The campaign is a fundraiser to help build a new playground at the elementary school, and the school is looking for $100,000 to install a new natural type playground.

“To replace our primary playground structure with a natural type playground,” Rhonda Simon, the Principal and a teacher at the school said. “We started last year, and are continuing to fundraise this year, and to do some grant writing as well to try and raise the money we need.”

The campaign went well so far, Simon said. Although, there’s still a lot of work to do in securing the funds needed to bring the playground to the school.

“Which seems like a lot, but in comparison to the traditional structures, it’s less, but definitely comparable,” she said. “We have raised roughly $15,000 (so far).”

The campaign is for families of students and alumni, to buy a plaque for $25 dollars that will stay in the school’s foyer. The plaques will have donator’s names on them, and will be a part of the history of Bready’s school for the future.

The decision in going with a natural play space was an easy one for the elementary school. Simon said the upside is long-lasting, and skill building for the children.

“They foster imaginative free play, they encourage social interaction,” she said. “We know that returning kids to nature, and playing in nature is good for academics and learning as well. The nice part of this is accessible to everyone, not just those looking for the “get on the monkey bars” kinds of kids. We want to have all those opportunities, where kids can explore, create and challenge themselves.”

The goal is to begin to break ground this spring on the project. Moving forward, the school will also be rolling out a cash calendar for families to purchase to continue to get to their $100,000 goal.
