Town street formally christened Central Avenue

A street with too many names will now see see some clarity in the town of Battleford.

Council approved formally designating the name of one of its streets to Central Avenue at its recent meeting.

The street runs from 10th Avenue to Wheeler Bay.

“It makes it more streamlined,” Coun. Judy Pruden told battlefordsNOW. “Everyone referred to it as Regional Care Road at one time. It can get confusing for travellers and visitors to the town. It just makes it more uniform.”

Mayor Ames Leslie said it’s not that unusual for a municipality to rename a street.

“Streets get renamed all the time,” he said. “This one was done because there is extreme confusion. Three or four of the councillors around the table thought the street had a different name than what it actually is.”

He said some of the names being used in the community also include Wheeler Road and Winnipeg Street.

“Depending on when a person moved here, they have a different name for the street,” Leslie said.

The fire department and RCMP have also brought forth concerns that “when they get a call to this road they don’t know where it is,” the mayor added.

Leslie said the town will be clearing up a few items with Information Services Corporation in Saskatchewan to ensure the streets in that part of Battleford are properly recorded.

He added Wheeler Bay will stay as Wheeler Bay.

“Some people call it a different name but it’s going to officially remain with this name,” Leslie added.

The town will now advise the appropriate government agencies to make sure everyone is informed of the change.

“It’s just for a better understanding,” Leslie said. “It creates some uniformity within the community as well.”
