North Stars roll to second straight win

Sep 29, 2018 | 8:07 AM

The Battlefords North Stars beat the Weyburn Red Wings 3-2 today in the first matchup of the season between the two clubs.

Owen Lamb opened the scoring just under seven minutes in on a shot from in tight, after extended pressure put on by Lamb and his linemates, Braydon Buziak and Elijah Loon-Stewardson cycling the puck down low in the attacking zone.

The tally marked the third time this season the North Stars have opened the scoring.

Ryan Granville, who made his way back into the lineup for the first time since Sept. 20 at home against Melfort, scored just beyond the half-way mark of the first to make it 2-0 for the Stars, giving the Battlefords’ squad their second goal from the blueline this season.

Matthias Urbanski, who saw his three-game goal scoring streak snapped did however, manage to pick up the lone helper on the play, extending his team scoring lead further to seven points through the first six games.

The first period would end 2-0 for the Battlefords.

The second period saw a bit of a push back from the Red Wings, thanks in large-part to a barrage of penalties taken by the North Stars. The Stars would take four minor penalties over the course of the period, with Weyburn’s scoring phenom, Ben Hiltz scoring his seventh goal of the year in just his fifth game. Goaltender, Reilly Lamb got the lone assist for his team.

Just over four minutes into the second period and it was a one-shot game. The contest remained that way until with just over five minutes remaining, MacGregor Sinclair would deliver his team the insurance marker they had been pressing for since early in the second:

Sinclair, picking up the puck and walking it into the zone was being watched by the defender. One-on-one the 20-year-old Irma, AB native prowled his way in on the attack, dangling the puck out in front of him and winding his way in like a cobra, almost taunting its prey before a strike.

Almost as if sensing his partner’s desperate need for help, the far side d-man came over in support. Sinclair, unfazed and almost with a smirk, made his move. First outside, then inside – around the first defender he went, and then just when it seemed like the second man back was immune to his venom, with one swift flick of the wrist, the veteran of just over 110 SJHL games sunk his fangs into the scoresheet and ultimately sealed the victory for his team in tantalizing fashion.

Jordan Kazymyra would score with seconds remaining in the third, but it would prove too little, too late. Stars win, 3-2.

The North Stars will now get a couple days off to rest and regroup before getting back in action this Friday at home against the Estevan Bruins.
