No suspects in North Battleford Amber Alert case

Sep 17, 2018 | 12:15 PM

The subject of an Amber Alert is back with her family following a harrowing incident that began shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday evening.

A six-year-old girl was left in her car seat in the back of a running vehicle when it was stolen from a strip mall in North Battleford. This morning, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Saskatchewan RCMP received information that a vehicle matching the description was parked in a remote, industrial area within the city limits in some bushes.

“Members attended to the area with EMS personnel and located the subject of the Amber Alert inside the vehicle,” RCMP Cpl. Rob King said at a press conference Monday morning. “The child was located conscious and taken to hospital to be examined and reunited with her family.”

The child has since been discharged from the hospital.

King said investigators don’t know how long the vehicle was in the area before it was located or where else it may have travelled. It was found about two kilometres from where it was stolen.  King said the vehicle was ‘tucked away in the bushes’ and would have been difficult for searchers to spot, especially during the dark.

The vehicle will be processed for physical evidence while members of the Major Crimes North, North Battleford GIS and Forensic Identification Sections continue to investigate.

“We currently do not have any suspects in custody…however this investigation remains ongoing,” King said.

When asked if the caregivers could face charges for leaving a child in the backseat of a running vehicle, King said that wasn’t the current focus of the case. The focus was getting the child back to her parents and then determining who stole the vehicle.
