Living Sky seeing increased enrolment overall

Living Sky School Division is experiencing some good numbers overall for the new school year’s enrolment.

Based on the latest report provided at Wednesday’s school board meeting in North Battleford, the division has a good-sized increase compared to the projected numbers. 

“It’s always nice to come in higher than you’ve projected,” Director of Education Brenda Vickers said following the meeting.

When looking at the school’s breakdown numbers based on the Sept. 6 report, the division is shown to be 127 above what was expected. The division intially projected 5,416 students, while the actual total came in at 5,543. On Sept. 8, 2017, the division had 5,674 students enrolled.

Living Sky confirmed it has a sufficient number of teachers for the new school year and is currently fully staffed.

When breaking the enrolment numbers down for the schools, the report shows some variances between projected counts.

McKitrick Community School saw an increase of 17 students, with 182 projected compared to 199 reported for the actual count, as of Sept. 6. At the same time last year the school had 193 students.

“That is a surprise,” Vickers said, adding the school had more students in Kindergarten than projected for this school which would impact the numbers.

Connaught School experienced a drop by 27 students compared to projections. The report indicated the division anticipated 229 students, however the total count came in at 202 students instead. At the same time last year the school had 234 enrolled.

Vickers said Connaught’s student population can often vary a bit, so this is not unusual.

“It may go up and down before September 30,” she added. “In some of our schools the population fluctuates more than others, so Connaught would be one of those.”

North Battleford Comprehensive High School came in with a significant 62 students above what was forecast. A total of 1,110 was projected, while the actual amount was 1,172. Last year at the same time the high school had 1,222 students enrolled. 

Bready School had 24 more students than anticipated this year. The school’s projected count was 196, while its actual amount showed 220 students enrolled. At the same time last year 219 students were enrolled.

Vickers said the division isn’t overly surprised by any of the numbers in the report. She is satisfied with the results and the improvement compared to projections. 

“It’s nice to come in over rather than under,” she added of the total tally.
