Many changes and improvements for NBCK Band Hall

Sep 7, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Moving into their 70th anniversary, the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band saw many changes and improvements.

The biggest has to be the facilities in which they run their entire operation. There has been significant improvements to their home, the City Kinsmen Band Hall. The city owned facility is leased out by the NBCK Band, and extensive renovations began in May 2017.

The total cost of the renovations worked out to be around $300,000, and involved the configuration of the rehersal hall, changing windows, lighting, insulation, roof repairs, and paint throughout the inside and outside of the building.

North Battleford City Kinsmen Band Association Inc. President David Dekker said in a news conference this week they’re looking to recover their investment through a fundraising program.

“What we’re looking for are donations from members of the community, businesses or past or current  members of the band. We’re going to put up a large plaque in this hall, recognizing donations of $1,000 or more,” Dekker said.

Dekker said they already had four donations of that size, but at the same time mentioned that they will accept donations of any size. Another change to the facility, is the fact that it isn’t just for the band. They will be accepting rentals as well.

“We have reconfigured. What we did was make it more amenable for to stage musical events. We have the facility available for events. People are welcome to inquire about rental rates,” he said.

In addition to being the new director for the NBCK Band, Michael Alstad will also be managing the facility.

Also in the press conference, Dekker acknowledged a significant donation that was given to the band. The estate of Margaret Salmon was donated, after she passed away in 2006. The provision of the donation was to help grow the youth component of the band. The rehearsal hall at the Band Hall was renamed the “Margaret Salmon Rehearsal Hall” in recognition of her contribution.

Registration night for the NBCK Band is on Monday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. It is open to all ages in the beginner, intermediate, senior and student categories.
