Battlefords Minor Baseball opens up new diamond

Aug 27, 2018 | 10:10 AM

It was a great weekend for baseball in the Battlefords.

Battlefords Minor Baseball unveiled a new diamond in the city behind the Don Ross Centre, made possible by the Blue Jays Care Foundation and the City of North Battleford. The new location overlooks the river and the town of Battleford.

Aaron Bru, Bantam Director for BMB, told battlefordsNOW the unveiling went smoothly.

“The weather came around for us, and it was a fantastic day. We ended up with a good turnout, especially for the fan base. The amount of people that showed up to support it, and the kids had a great day and a great game, with a little bit of rivalry.”

The game was the main event of the day, along with training within BMB. Younger athletes were trained by the older athletes within the baseball association. The event also involved a free lunch, along with a game between the bantams and the midget teams mixed into two teams.

Without the cooperation of the city and the Blue Jays Foundation, Bru said the new diamond would never have happened. He says the field will bring young athletes together from across the Battlefords.

“Were just trying to promote organized sports for kids,” he said. “The more we can do that, (the better), we’re on to our second venture in this to try and do more diamond improvements as well.”

It’s another place that gives young athletes in the Battlefords an opportunity to improve their skills and grow the game within the area, Bru added.

“We designed the diamond so it can be used for multiple age groups,” he said. “It opens up more diamond space and it’s a beautiful facility, the view is fantastic looking over to Battleford. It comes out like an infinity pool to some degree.”

The next event for the BMB will be on October 27th when they have their Celebrity Sports Dinner. Tom Henke and Danny Cox will be speaking at the event, which will be mediated by TSN’s Tessa Bonhomme.
