Battlefords Pride celebration a success

Aug 26, 2018 | 8:31 AM

Battlefords Pride celebrations keep getting bigger and better.

This year the LGBT Battlefords and Area Pride event included a week of festivities in both North Battleford and Battleford.

Area residents attending Pride Fest Saturday enjoyed the sounds of live music downtown and had an opportunity to visit a number of vendor and information booths, grab a bite to eat or take part in a Pride-themed street-art project.

Highlighting festivities was the parade, which saw increased participation this year.

“The walk was amazing,” Bobbisue Thompson said, who is with the Pride Week organizing committee. “I was at the front; then, I turned around and I said ‘Wow.’  I didn’t realize how many people were behind. I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness!’ It’s awesome.”

She estimated there were up to 150 people taking part, a drastic increase from the roughly 60-some participants last year.

“It’s a big step up,” Thompson said. “Every year the awareness is going to get better. The visibility is important.”

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater and Coun. Kent Lindgren were among those marching in the parade. Saskatoon-Fairview MLA Vicki Mowat, who is one of the scheduled participants at the Pride Week Speakers event at the North Battleford Library Sunday, also took part.

“I think it’s a very important event, and it’s particularly important that we have representatives from all levels of government there,” Mowat said.

Mowat participated last year and was glad to see so many events happening in the Battlefords for Pride as it helps “spread the important message of acceptance.”.
