Concert in the Park brings community together

Live music poured out of Central Park in North Battleford, while the aroma of burgers sizzling on a barbecue filled the air Wednesday during the noon hour.

It was all part of the Concert in the Park series organized by the North Battleford Business Improvement District (BID) organization.

This week’s show featured Prince Albert alternative rock band The Wolfe.

“We have two EPs out, so we are touring our music,” Siobhan Bayda, a singer and bass-player in the all-girl trio, said. “This is our first time playing in North Battleford.”

The group was a finalist in a 2017 music talent search.

Misty Lavertu, executive director with the BID non-profit group, said she appreciated the work involved in bringing The Wolfe in for the concert.

“We were excited to be able to get them to come out for the lunch-time [show],” she said.

Lavertu added the concert series has been a great success.

“We try and do it every second Wednesday,” she said. “It’s just promoting the downtown.

“They are doing a lot of work down here,” Lavertu added of the city’s downtown revitalization efforts. “It’s really exciting to see the progress that has been made over the last couple of years. This (event) just gives the community an opportunity to come out, listen to some free music and grab a burger”

While the BID organizes the series of concerts over the summer, individual businesses and organizations sponsor the concert-barbecue event.

The fundraiser barbecue for the day Wednesday benefitted KidSport, while the event was sponsored by RBC Dominion Securities.

Lavertu hopes by having the Concert in the Park event downtown it will encourage more people to visit their local businesses in the downtown core, and give a boost to the local economy at the same time.

There will be one more Concert in the Park coming up this summer. Because one of the concerts in the series was cancelled previously due to rain, the BID extended the schedule to add another show for this season.
