‘Very fond memories’: Sask. Baseball HOF induction set for Saturday

Aug 14, 2018 | 10:00 AM

Inductees are calling it an honour and a privilege.

All eyes will be on Battleford this Saturday as 12 individuals, one team, one community, and one family will be officially inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame. Cut knife’s Bye Braun, Wilkie’s Lorne Nielsen, and the Keller family from Wilkie are the local inductees in this year’s class.

Nielsen, who was born just outside of Scott and still resides in Wilkie, told battlefordsNOW about his reaction when he learned he was joining the hall of fame.

“It’s a very special thing to happen,” he said. “The first thing that you think about is a lot of people along the way that you’ve shared your baseball career with. You have very fond memories of coaches and players and even the kids you’ve coached along the way.”

Along with the local inductees, the lone inductee in the community category is Leader, just shy of 300 kilometres southeast of the Battlefords. The Carlyle Cardinals will also be inducted in the team category.

David Lemieux was a long-time Cardinal, playing and coaching with the club for the past 20 years. Lemieux told battlefordsNOW that he still has a surreal feeling about the induction.

“It’s exciting, but shocking,” he said. “When I was first approached about it, I doubted that it would happen but I knew it was an honour to be considered. When I got the phone call it didn’t really register. As I started putting things together this spring, it really hit home and we’re getting more and more excited moving up to the induction.”

The other 10 individuals being inducted on Saturday are Murray Eddy of Saskatoon, Gary Frank of Regina, James D. Golightly of Eatonia, the late Joseph E. Haberman of Regina, Harvey Johnson of Regina, Arnold Lund of Loon Lake, Jack Sell of Bowden, Alta., Shane Simpson of Regina, Randy Treautwein of Leader, and Neil Tulloch of Regina.

Festivities kick off Saturday at 11 a.m. with an informal luncheon at the Legion Hall in Battleford. Guest speaker Dan Raynish from Toronto, and Inductor Randy Atchinson of Yorkton will also be in attendance. Throughout the day there are tours of the museum planned, along with a reception, dinner, and ending with the induction ceremony at the Alex Dillabough Centre.
