Acclaimed East Coast musician playing house concert in Battleford

Aug 13, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Award-winning singer and songwriter J.P. Cormier is looking forward to being in Battleford tonight for a house concert – his first time playing here.

The East Coast artist will be performing with Dave Gunning, covering songs from their recent album, called Two.

“We’re basically a pair of solo singer-songwriters and instrumentalists who have made a record together,” said Cormier, who is based in Halifax. “That’s what the show is based on; two guitars and two vocals.”

The veteran performer described their music as falling into the Americana and folk genres.

“We’re inspired by all the normal Canadian legends; Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Stan Rogers, and Ian Tyson,” Cormier said. “We’re just old folkies.”

Cormier said he loves giving house concerts. The Internet has made music more accessible, he said, which helps expands audiences and fill many types of venues. The local family that will be hosting the house concert said all the proceeds from the event go right back to the artists.

“It’s mostly to bring more music to the Battlefords,” Jessica Labman said.

Cormier and Gunning will take the stage at 7:30 p.m.
