24th BUH Foundation Cash Lottery opens today

Aug 13, 2018 | 12:00 PM

If you’re looking to purchase your tickets for the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation’s $100,000 Cash Lottery, the time is now.

The lottery opened this morning, and tickets will be on sale until November 2. There are six ways to win for the 24th-annual lottery. The first draws, the “We Give a Hoot” selections, will be 20 draws for $1,000 each. Those, along with the “Owl Always Be There For You” draws, which are five draws for $2,000 each, will be held September 21, with the purchase deadline on September 14.

Claudette MacGuire, executive director of the BUH Foundation, told battlefordsNOW the proceeds from this year’s lottery will be used to purchase a new mammography unit for the hospital’s medical imaging department.

“Every year there are over 2,000 mammograms done on men and women,” she said. “It catches cancer early, and when you catch cancer early it’s most treatable.”

The “We’re Hooting For You” previous purchaser draw for $10,000, the “Hoot Hoot Good Luck To You” Draws of 15 for $1,000 each, and the 50/50 Enhancement with a minimum prize guarantee of $25,000 will be drawn October 19, with the purchasing deadline set for October 12. There is a small catch when it comes to the 50/50 enhancement, which MacGuire said is usually more profitable than the guaranteed $25,000.

“Generally, the payout is just over $50,000,” she said. “The 50/50 enhancements are only purchased with a lottery ticket purchase. You can’t come on your own and buy a 50/50 ticket.”

The final draw will be held November 8 at 10 a.m. with a purchase deadline of November 2. That will be the grand prize $100,000 cash draw, as well as 23 consolation draws of $1,000. MacGuire said the entire lottery helps a great cause, and knowing that you can win some money while still supporting local healthcare is great for the community.

“It’s a fundraiser where the money that is spent stays in the community,” she said. “It supports local healthcare and it supports the community by keeping the BUH strong and viable.”

Tickets can be purchased through the phone, online, at the BUH Foundation office, or at the hospital gift shop. The tickets are $50 each, 3 for $125, or 5 for $200.
