Those Were the Days Returns to N.B.

Aug 7, 2018 | 3:00 PM

Those Were the Days will be returning to the Western Development Museum in North Battleford this weekend, offering a variety of fun events for families to discover the best of the past.

The theme this year is “Take a stroll down memory lane.”

“We’ve got two jam-packed days full of fun,” manager Joyce Smith said. “We’ll be doing all our field demonstrations, all our domestic demonstrations … ice cream-, butter- and soap- making.”

Volunteers will provide visitors with a little of the history of threshing and other Heritage Village demonstrations taking place.

“We’ll go through the whole story of how the harvest was done,” Smith said.

One of the new highlights this year will be a visit from Obie the Safety Train. A representative from CN will be on hand to offer advice on how to stay safe around trains and train yards. There will also be free train rides available.

“The cars will be going; the horse rides will be going,” Smith said. “There’s a lot going on.”

Those Were the Days will run Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m.

Both days start with a flapjack breakfast from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Threshing demos will take place at 3 p.m. as part of the line up of activities.

Visitors can also take part in wagon and fire-truck rides, and also watch a miniature horse show as part of the activities.

Another new event this year is the Great Pioneer Baking Competition at 2:30 p.m. People who wish to participate need to register in advance.

Also new for Sunday only visitors can take in Dr. Von Houligans Carnival of Calamities.

Entertainment is also planned for both days starting at 11 a.m., with the last act to start at 3 p.m.
