Federal and provincial funding to benefit local housing

Aug 1, 2018 | 4:54 PM

The province has announced both the provincial and federal governments will contribute a total $6.7 million in funding for affordable housing initiatives for various communities across Saskatchewan, including the local area.

In a news release the province said the funding will help create more than 53 affordable housing units in seven different communities.

The release said the aim of the joint funding support is to “deliver more affordable housing solutions for households in greatest need.”

Among the selected projects is $500,000 for the Battlefords Indian Métis Friendship Centre in North Battleford for an eight-unit co-housing project for homeless individuals.

Also included is $2.54 million for the northern town of La Ronge for 10 affordable rental units for seniors in La Ronge; as well as $640,000 for Methy Housing Corporation for six rental housing units for single-parent families in La Loche.

“Our government is pleased to support the growth of a stronger housing market in Saskatchewan by increasing housing supply, providing housing support to individuals and families in greatest need and creating opportunities for private sector investment in affordable housing,” Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Social Services Greg Lawrence said. “Together with our partners, these seven projects will help Saskatchewan people live in dignity and comfort, and continue to keep Saskatchewan strong.”
