Beware of doorstep testing kits: Water Security Agency

Jul 31, 2018 | 12:00 PM

If you’ve found a “water testing kit” on your doorstep with instructions to fill up the bottle and send it to a private company for testing, you might want to think twice before trusting the results.

That’s according to Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency, which said the testing kits have recently shown up at homes in the northern and central regions of the province. WSA Spokesperson Ron Podbielski said the kits are unlikely to return accurate results as they don’t appear to be sterile and don’t contain correct instructions for water sampling. He said it’s important for the public to be careful in order to avoid being pressured into purchasing costly filtration or purification systems from the private companies passing out the questionable testing kits.

“What we do at the Water Security Agency is to ensure that our municipal water systems are safe,” he said. “If people are concerned about their water supply, we are always there to ensure that their water is safe.”

Just because a testing kit has arrived on your door, Podbielski said that’s no indication that your local supply is unsafe to drink. Although some residents may wish to purchase or use water purification systems in their homes, he said the Water Security Agency should still be the first point of contact for any members of the public who have concerns about municipal water. The agency performs regular and highly-regulated testing, he said, and publishes the results for the public to review.
