Gerwing wins NSRBL MVP for 2018

The North Saskatchewan River Baseball League has chosen its MVP for the 2018 season.

Kevin Gerwing, of the Meadow Lake Sox, was chosen as the league’s most valuable player after batting .604 over 14 games. His hitting helped push the Sox into the playoffs, though they lost out to Wilkie in the first round. Gerwing told battlefordsNOW he felt great about taking home the Eldon Elliott- Dr. Ian Smith Trophy.

“It’s a good honour to have the other teams feel like I deserve it,” he said. “I had a pretty strong start this year, and I was able to keep a level of consistency that I wasn’t able to keep in the last few years.”

Gerwing had 29 hits over his 14 games including seven doubles, a league-leading 21 RBIs, and 15 runs. He said the size of the league made winning the award all the more special.

“We have a pretty small league; everybody knows everybody,” he said. “There’s no surprises, so when you get stats like this and when everybody starts seeing what you’re doing, they pitch you differently. It makes it a lot harder when the stats are visible like that.”

Over 111 games, Gerwing has a career batting average of .427 dating back to 2010. He hit his 100th RBI this past season and has 102 overall in his career. He established new career highs in hits (29), doubles (7), RBI’s (21), batting average (.604), on-base percentage (.661) and slugging percentage (.812).
