Neighbourhood profiles report offers in-depth analysis into N.B. communities

The City of North Battleford’s project to name and establish boundaries for the city’s neighbourhoods now also includes an in-depth analysis into the makeup of each community.

The study, called City of North Battleford Community Profiles, includes information on neighbourhood demographics and trends.

Some of the information reflected in the report shows the percentage of home ownership, home values, median household income, and rate of unemployment. It also shows the number of schools and available park space in a particular neighbourhood, as well as the total number of residences and type of housing offered.

North Battleford’s City Community Safety Coordinator Herb Sutton, who also works part-time with the local RCMP as a community program coordinator, said appreciating each neighbourhood’s qualities and offerings benefits the community and the city as a whole.

“One of the major priorities with the city, in terms of creating a safer community is promoting that sense of community across the city,” Sutton said. “That’s easier done at a neighbourhood level than at an entire city level.

If we can create the identity of the particular neighbourhoods and the community profiles that helps give a sense of pride as well for people who live and work within those areas.”

According to the city’s website, the city submitted information to Statistics Canada who were then able to break down North Battleford’s census details. The city was able to use that data to create its neighbourhood profiles.

The city’s report also provides an overview of North Battleford itself.

It indicates the rate of home ownership is 63.9 per cent in N.B., compared to 71.9 per cent across the province. The average value of a home in North Battleford is $232,120, compared to $299,606 in the province overall. The median total income per household in N.B. is $62,207, versus $75,388 in the province. The unemployment rate in N.B. is higher than the provincial average, at 8.7 per cent, compared to 7.1 per cent in the province.

The Neighbourhood Profiles report was compiled by the City of North Battleford Planning and Development Department.

The city’s neighbourhoods design project was originally initiated through the work of the city’s Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) review committee.
