Town of Battleford looking for more support for annual parade

Jul 30, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Town of Battleford is urging people who are planning to participate in its 35th annual parade to make an effort to register this week.

“By the beginning of next week we would like to have the majority of them in,” Parks and Recreation Director Jordan Schechtel said.

An entry can be considered a float, a group or organization walking or riding in the parade, or a school group taking part, as a few examples.

Schechtel said last year there were about 50 entries participating. The town is hoping for more people to register so it has an adequate number of entries taking part.

“The sooner you put them in the better,” he said. “We don’t have a whole lot right now.”

Schechtel said the town doesn’t have a theme for this year’s parade.

He said businesses are also welcome to take part, including agricultural equipment dealers and enthusiasts who want to display their heavy equipment in the parade.

“I don’t think we’ve had that for a few years,” said Schechtel. “We’ll see if it comes.”

Community and school bands are also invited to participate.

Similar to last year, the town has offered to store people’s floats at no charge if they are taking part in the town’s parade Aug. 10, and then the upcoming parade in North Battleford Aug. 14.

“We have room for about 10 floats in there, so yes it’s first come first served,” Schechtel said. He added last year the town accommodated about eight floats for people wanting to take advantage of the incentive.

The route for the parade this year will once again start at St. Vital school’s track, travel along 22nd Street, to First Avenue, along 25th Street, and then back to the school track. Entries will be judged from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The parade is scheduled to take place Friday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. Fireworks will follow at 10 p.m. on the field across from Fort Battleford.

Registration forms are available on the town’s website. The deadline to register is Aug. 7.
