Rotary District Governor promotes peace-building at local meeting

Rotary 5370 District Governor Ingrid Neitsch gave an inspirational speech about peace-building when she visited the Battlefords Rotary Club Monday.

About 25 local Rotarians attended the luncheon meeting in North Battleford.

“One of the areas I think is really important in our world right now is to look at peace-building initiatives,” Neitsch said, following the meeting. She added these projects connect with Rotary International’s mission.

“If we’re doing a project in the community where we’re helping students with conflict resolution or we’re doing mental health activities, I know this club is doing some random acts of kindness throughout the community. All of those things help build a more peaceful existence for us,” she said.

Neitsch said the local Rotary is a “vibrant club” that has been around for 98 years.

“They’ve done service in this community in so many different ways, not only through their fundraising [work]; but they have some great new ideas they want to bring forward to this community,” she added.

Neitsch mentioned Rotary is one of the world’s greatest volunteer organizations, comprised of leaders from across the business community.

The main goal is to “continue our great service in our communities,” she said. “The Rotary Club here in the Battlefords has some fabulous projects that they are working on where they give support to their community.”

Rotary is also looking to increase membership in the district and in particular attract younger members to the organization. It also wants to increase its public image by sharing its success stories.

Local Rotary president Wayne Ray said Neitsch’s presentation was timely since it marked the start of Rotary’s year.

He said some of the things she identified as the goals for the district also “meet exactly the same type of goals” the local club is working on.

“It’s encouraging that we’re on the right path together,” he said.

On the issue of peace-building raised during the meeting, Ray said there is an opportunity for the local club to get on board with that as well.

Ray said local Rotary members want to partner with other organizations working toward helping youth with mental health.

“That’s a big challenge for us, but I think it’s an opportunity for our Rotary club to assist in that area as well,” he said.
