Walk off win gives Beavers lead in series

Jul 13, 2018 | 12:00 PM

The Beavers are going back to Unity with a chance to close out the defending champions.

The North Battleford team took game one last night at Beaver Lions Stadium by a score of 7-6, and it wasn’t until the seventh inning that they took the win. Unity jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, and the Beavers were playing catch up from that point on.

Coach and player Kyle Palmer told battlefordsNOW that he liked what he saw in the stands.

“It was pretty good,” he said. “People started trickling in and it was an intense crowd we had by the end.”

The game was tight throughout, and it wasn’t until the final batter that the Beavers won, in walk off fashion.

“We had the bases loaded at the bottom of the seventh,” Palmer said. “(Ryan) Shepherd ended up coming in and scoring the winning run.”

Coming in to the series, the Beavers knew they would be in tough against Unity, and game one was evidence of that.

“We knew coming in that Unity is the defending champions,” Palmer said. “They have a really good team, really good defence and really good pitching. They have some good hitters; we knew it was going to be a tough series from the get go. We just need to keep playing a clean game, have a couple clean innings pitching wise and were really confident. We’re confident against anyone.”

The Beavers will travel to Unity on Tuesday to try and close out the series. If necessary, game three will be in North Battleford on Wednesday. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
