Battlefords Boys and Girls Club summer programs on now

Jul 9, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The summer programs for the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club are well underway.

The club has a variety of different programs running during the warm months, from Summer Adventure Camps to a Blue Jays Rookie League Program and the Summer Brain Gain Program. Erin Cooper, executive assistant for the club, told battlefordsNOW about the Summer Brain Gain, a literacy and math program that starts next week.

“During the summer the kids lose some of those skills because they’re not using them as frequently,” she said. “When they go back to school, it’s been shown there is that loss. Our program is to help keep that, so when they go back to school they haven’t lost [those skills].”

The club also offers Summer Adventure Day Camps, which run weekly and include a different theme every week.

“We’re on Treasure Hunters week,” Cooper said. “Week three is The World Around Us, so exploring, creating, and presenting our own imaginary worlds as well as our trip to the Allan Sapp Gallery. Week four is Amazing Animals, so we’re going to learn about domestic and wild animals. Our trip that week is to the Forestry Farm and the fishing pond in Saskatoon.”

Cooper said the children enjoy the club’s programs, and there’s always something for them to do.

“It’s a great time,” Cooper said. “When they’re not doing these programs there is free time, so they can be in our splash park or playground, interacting with our wonderful staff, creating and exploring and having great times.”

The club is also running their Blue Jays Rookie League Program each week, which sees the kids learning about baseball, sports, and teamwork.
