Battlefords United FC getting set for Provincials

Jun 27, 2018 | 12:00 PM

With the World Cup on everyone’s minds right now, it’s a great time to get out and watch a game live right here in the Battlefords.

This weekend the Saskatchewan Soccer Youth Provincials will be held in North Battleford, with the under-17 and under-19 boys competing locally. Kat Huxley, head coach of the U19 Battlefords United FC and Competitive Co-ordinator for Youth Soccer in North Battleford, has high expectations for the teams.

“I expect the under-17s to be in the semi-finals at least,” Huxley said. “And the under-19s [are already] in the final.”

The action kicks off Friday when the under-17 boys play against the Aurora Celtics at 5:45 at the Inside Track. There will be a total of 9 matches, three for each team, leading to the Sunday playdowns where the top four teams will start the semifinals, then the finals take place at North Comp at 2:30.

The under-19 boys’ division had an easier road to the finals, as they will play a two-game match on aggregate Saturday and Sunday against Yorkton United FC, both at the North Comp. Games are scheduled for 4:45 Saturday and 11:30 Sunday.

Huxley said the provincials are going to help the entire soccer program in the Battlefords, and they will be hosting a barbecue throughout the event to raise additional funds.

“The competitive program is using it as a fundraiser for new equipment and replacement of jerseys,” Huxley said. “We’re also looking towards growing our competitive program by getting a technical director in the fall. Some of the money raised will be going to that person’s salary.”
