The New Beginnings fundraising campaign for the Saskatchewan Hospital has received another sizeable donation which will help purchase medical equipment and furniture for the new mental health facility, which is scheduled to open this fall.

At its meeting June 13, the R.M. of North Battleford No. 437 unanimously supported contributing $70 per resident to the campaign, for a total of $51,138.

“We recognized the huge benefit that this hospital has and will continue to provide the City of North Battleford, surrounding communities and the R.M.s.” Administrator Debbie Arsenault said. “The economic spinoff during the construction phase for the past few years has helped shelter the city and area from downturn other communities have faced.”

During a recent presentation by members of the fundraising committee, the R.M. council noted this is a provincial hospital and so many municipalities throughout the province have contributed even without having any economic benefits.

“We want to see our communities grow and see the new hospital as a huge opportunity for our area to flourish,” Arsenault added. “When you talk about a possible 450 jobs being created with the hospital, everyone benefits.”

The New Beginnings campaign has been tasked with raising eight million dollars towards the new Saskatchewan Hospital.  The campaign currently sits at $6.6 million raised.

The estimated construction cost of the project is roughly $222 million, with the province expects to cover the full anticipated cost, including long-term maintenance fees, for an estimated total cost of $407 million.
