Capitol Theatre celebrates anniversary of re-opening

May 29, 2018 | 2:00 PM

For Theatre Manager Ursula Swindler, time seems to be flying.

This Saturday will mark one full year since the Capitol Theatre re-opened to the public. The theatre closed for several months last year to undergo massive reconstruction when the building was purchased by Magic Lantern Theatres Inc.

“I have no idea where the time has gone,” Swindler said. “Seems like yesterday we were scrambling making sure everything was in place and that the facility was in tiptop shape.”

When the Capitol Theatre re-opened June 2, 2017, the superhero movie Wonder Woman was the first film the audience was treated to. This weekend the blockbuster superhero movie Avengers: Infinity War will be held over for a second week with a matinee at 2 p.m. and a regular show at 7:30 p.m.

“To celebrate the anniversary, from 10 a.m. and until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, we will be showing trailers of movies that are coming soon,” Swindler said. “This will also give people who have never been here a chance to come in and check us out and see the renovations free of charge, plus we will have draws for prizes and an auction for some big movie posters like Star Wars.”

Since the theatre re-opened last June, Swindler said she has received nothing but accolades from happy customers.

“One thing I wanted to achieve with the staff was first-rate customer service,” she said. “People have so many options these days to spend their entertainment dollars, so we do our best to make them feel welcome when they walk in and as they leave the movie we acknowledge their business was appreciated.”

Swindler said excitement continues to build in the community as construction on the new Magic Lantern four-plex on 101st St. moves into its second week.  The new cinema is expected to open early next summer.
